This policy applies to all content submitted to the Gallery of Human Migration, including stories submitted to the Stories Collection and works submitted to the Migration Literary Award. By submitting any content, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to the terms below.
The Gallery of Human Migration believes that every story submitted to us remains the intellectual property of its author. We do not claim ownership of your work. What we ask for — and what you grant us by submitting — is permission to share it, always with full credit and care.
By submitting your content, you grant the Gallery of Human Migration a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to publish, display, reproduce, distribute, and archive your work across the Gallery’s channels—including its website, Stories Collection, social media, newsletter, print materials, exhibitions, and any curated print or digital anthology produced by the Gallery or in partnership with a publisher—for the purposes of fulfilling the Gallery’s mission.
This licence does not transfer ownership of your work. You retain full copyright. The Gallery will always credit you as the author.
Duration: This licence is granted for the duration of the copyright in the work, unless the author requests removal in writing and the Gallery agrees.
The Gallery reserves the right to determine whether to publish submitted content. Submission does not guarantee publication or inclusion.
By submitting, you confirm that:
• The content is your own original work, or an ancestral story you have the right to share.
• It does not infringe upon the copyright, trademark, or intellectual property rights of any third party.
• The content is truthful to the best of your knowledge, and you take responsibility for its accuracy.
The Gallery is committed to the ethical stewardship of all submitted stories, including ancestral narratives. Content involving Indigenous histories, oral traditions, or community knowledge will be handled with particular care, in keeping with the Gallery’s Indigenous values framework.
The Gallery may make minor editorial adjustments to submitted work for clarity, formatting, or accessibility before publication. The Gallery will not make significant changes to the substance, meaning, or voice of a submitted work without the author’s knowledge and agreement.
Authors retain their moral rights under the Canadian Copyright Act. Nothing in this policy constitutes a waiver of those rights.
If your submission includes images or visual artworks, you confirm that:
• You hold the rights to those images, or have obtained appropriate permissions from the rights holder.
• You have provided appropriate credit to original creators where required.
• Where images include other individuals, you have considered their privacy and consent, and you take responsibility for the ethical use of those visuals.
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Gallery of Human Migration, its directors, officers, and staff from any third-party claim arising from images or visual content you submitted, including any claim of copyright infringement. The Gallery is not liable for copyright infringement arising from images submitted by contributors and will not mediate third-party copyright disputes.
Use of AI tools for support in the writing process is permitted. The creative authorship — the storytelling, voice, and structure — must be your own. By submitting, you confirm that the work is not copied from another source.
Once content is made public, it may be subject to viewing, sharing, or republication by third parties beyond the Gallery’s control. The Gallery is not liable for any such use of publicly available content. The Gallery is not able to pursue third-party infringement claims on behalf of authors. Authors who believe their published work has been reproduced without permission should seek independent legal advice.
You release the Gallery of Human Migration, its employees, officers, directors, and agents from any liability or claim that may arise from the use of the material in accordance with this policy.
You acknowledge that the Gallery will not provide financial compensation or remuneration for the use of submitted content under this policy.
This Content Submission Policy, together with the Gallery’s Terms of Use and Privacy Policy, constitutes the full agreement between you and the Gallery of Human Migration regarding submitted content.
This policy is governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, and is binding on you, your heirs, executors, successors, and assigns.
